Description

This model won the "Editor's Choice" award from Music Inc at NAMM 2023.

"It sounds like we're recording to tape!"

Mini K47x customer

editor's choice

On quiet sources, the K47x would sound similar to the Mini K47, although perhaps 1dB more neutral above 2kHz. On moderate to louder sources, the K47x circuit will be pushed into gentle saturation, which adds harmonic complexity and richness to the sound of the mic. Simultaneously, sharp transients in the source will be slightly rounded and softened, giving the K47x a a sound that evokes classic European tube microphones, or a 2-inch tape deck.

Like all Roswell microphones, the Mini K47x is assembled and tested in California, using the premium components and meticulous care for which Roswell is known.
Color, Character, Tone. Pick Any Three.

The mic's name, "K47x," refers both to the capsule design and circuit topology. The capsule is a K47 type. The "x" refers to the transformer-coupled circuit, which gives the mic its trademark harmonic saturation.

Every Roswell microphone is subjected to a 24-hr "burn in" on our proprietary conditioning fixture, then tested extensively prior to shipping: polarity, noise, frequency response, sensitivity, and more. We perform an acoustic sweep test and listen to every microphone multiple times before it leaves our facility.

The Mini K47x has a durable metallic paint finish; the color is Metallic Indigo. Each mic ships with our exclusive Cutaway™ shockmount, Roswell branded microfleece mic sock, and an upgraded flight case.
What it's NOT

The Mini K47x is not a replacement for the Mini K47. It's not an "upgraded" Mini K47. It is a new design that sounds different from the Mini K47. Read more about the differences in the "Features" tab.

Features
• Large-diaphragm, single backplate Roswell K47 capsule
• Vintage circuit design with Roswell T7 output transformer
• Hand-picked, audiophile-grade capacitors
• Heavy, solid steel body with Metallic Indigo finish
• Exclusive Cutaway™ non-resonant shockmount

Benefits
• Mid-forward frequency response complements piano, guitars, and vocals.
• Harmonic saturation enhances the source, much like a tube microphone would.
• Solid, high-quality construction ensures real-world durability and long service life.
• Low self-noise keeps hiss out of your tracks.

Design and Component Details

The Mini K47x capsule is a 34mm (large diaphragm) K47 design. It provides a presence boost in the 4-6kHz range. We tune the K47x capsule to have a milder presence boost than the Mini K47; this makes the K47x slightly more relaxed, or less "forward" sounding. design

The circuit design borrows from our flagship Colares microphone; it is a single-stage JFET/transformer topology, built around a selected vintage European-made output capacitor, the best-sounding modern filter capacitors on the market, and our own oversized T7 transformer with high nickel lamination.

The capacitor feeding the JFET is a critical component to the mic's sound. We've designed a custom bipolar electrolytic, with a special formulation of electrolyte that was initially developed for the legendary Black Gate line of capacitors.

Internal gain staging is carefully set for each individual mic to produce harmonic saturation at moderate SPL. This allows the Mini K47x to evoke the sound of vintage tube microphones, creating harmonics to complement the source, although without adding noise or crushing transients the way some tube mics would.
capacitor

While the circuit topology in the K47x is shared with the K67x, these circuits differ in implementation, because we treat each product as a complete system. Here are the main circuit differences from the K67x:
• The K47x uses a more colored type of resistor, while the K67x resistors were chosen for transparency.
• All the filter capacitors are different formulations. As with the resistors, the K47x parts were chosen for color.
• The K47x uses our T7 transformer, while the K67x uses our T9 transformer.

Compared to the Mini K47, the Mini K47x has softer transients and more saturation. The original Mini K47 was designed for accurate transient response and very low distortion. The Mini K47x, in contrast, embraces second-harmonic saturation as a sonic enhancement. A side-effect of the saturation circuit is that transients are slightly compressed in the Mini K47x.

Both the Mini K47 and Mini K47x provide unique, distinctive voices that deliver fantastic results for vocals, piano, guitars, and drum overheads.

Specifications
• Model: Mini K47x
• Acoustic Principle: Pressure gradient transducer
• Polar Pattern: Cardioid
• Capsule: 34mm O.D. True Condenser, single-backplate K47
• Frequency Range: 20 - 20,000 Hz
• Sensitivity: 12 mV/Pa
• Impedance: 200 Ohms
• Signal-to-noise: 81 dBA
• Equivalent noise: 13 dBA
• Supply voltage: 48±4 VDC
• Output: Transformer balanced
• Physical dimensions: 150 × 44mm; 380g (mic only)

This frequency chart is the same as the Mini K47. In practice, we tune the K47x with a slightly more vintage sound, which means approximately 1dB lower output above 4kHz than in the Mini K47.

Needless to say, for the K47x (and K67x) the frequency chart only tells half the story; the sound of the mic is determined in part by the circuit's saturation behavior. Circuit saturation does not affect frequency response, and as such is not illustrated by the frequency chart.

Roswell Pro Audio Mini K87 Matched Pair to 0.5dB in sensitivity (measured at 1kHz), and about 1.5dB in frequency response, 50Hz–15kHz. Acoustic testing is done at Roswell HQ in northern California. The matching procedure uses a calibrated, proprietary low-diffraction speaker to produce a swept sine wave, which we record with each Mini K87 to measure both sensitivity and frequency response. Each microphone is also auditioned by Roswell staff as a part of our rigorous QC process.

Each microphone includes our exclusive Cutaway™ metal-frame shockmount (with spare elastics). Matched pairs ship in a single stereo-pair aluminum flightcase, which holds two microphones and two shockmounts.

Roswell Audio Mini K47 captures the tone of a vintage microphone, with modern performance specifications.

"K47" refers to the capsule design. The capsule in this microphone is modeled after the one in the most famous microphone of all time. It provides a full, balanced tone without any harshness or hype in the upper frequencies. It will record less sibilance and fewer mouth sounds on your next vocal track. It will add weight and body to high strings and electric guitars. It will reduce the jangle in strummed acoustic tracks.

For this microphone, we chose a very clean and transparent circuit design. It lets the sound of the capsule pass through without alteration. Self-noise and distortion performance are on par with microphones costing significantly more. The circuit incorporates the best tricks we’ve learned from modifying and upgrading other companies’ products.

Royer Labs R-122 MKII - Active Ribbon Microphone
In 2002 we introduced the R-122, the world’s first phantom powered, active ribbon™ microphone. It was a revolutionary development in ribbon mics, combining impedance matching circuitry with condenser-like output levels that allowed the R-122 to be used on even the quietest sound sources. It also allowed the mic to be paired to virtually any preamplifier.

The R-122 MKll takes the R-122 to a whole new level, delivering unprecedented flexibility for ribbons via the addition of a switchable -15 dB pad and a switchable bass-cut filter. The switches are completely out of the circuit when disengaged so when both are off, the microphone is for all purposes an original R-122. The switches are located on the back of the microphone and recessed to prevent accidental activation.

Mojave Audio MA-37- Mojave’s take on the classic Sony C-37a
Retro. Futuristic. We are proud to introduce Technical Grammy Award Winner David Royer’s modern take on a legend – the Sony C-37a. Known for its high headroom and ability to tame brittle high end, it became a workhorse in the 60’s, especially during the golden age of Hollywood recording – the “Wrecking Crew’ era. Studios such as Capitol Records and Sunset Sound acquired multiples, which are still use today. From Leonard Bernstein and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and VO legend Mel Blanc (the voice of over 400 characters, from Bugs Bunny to Barney Rubble) though producer Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel) and current artists, such as Bon Iver, the C-37a remains a ‘secret weapon’ microphone for those in the know. David Royer, who has been a fan of the C-37a for thirty years, has long desired to o er his updated version to the Mojave family – and that time has come. He states, “Sony took a completely different approach than Neumann and AKG, which made the C-37a a completely different animal”.

Mojave Audio MA-300SN - Multi Pattern Tube Condenser Microphone
The MA-300 is a multi-pattern large diaphragm, vacuum tube condenser microphone. Based upon the widely accepted MA-200 designed by David Royer, the MA-300 adds a continuously variable pickup pattern selector, 15dB pad and a switchable bass roll-off. The MA-300 gives warm, full-bodied reproductions of vocals and instruments, with none of the shrillness and high frequency distortion artifacts that are often encountered with modern condenser microphones.

Utilizing hand-selected, double diaphragm 3-micron capsules, high-quality Jensen audio transformers and military-grade JAN 5840 vacuum tubes, the MA-300 performs at a level reminiscent of some of the best loved classic condenser microphones. The MA-300 power supply can be set for 115V and 230V, 50 or 60 Hz, through an internal switch (100V is also available). Each MA-300 microphone, power supply and cable set is burned in for 24 hours, carefully tested and evaluated, then packaged in its protective case-within-a-case.

Released in 1998, the award-winning R-121 is our flagship microphone; the world's first radically reengineered ribbon microphone and the model that reintroduced ribbon mics to engineers around the world. We did away with the large, heavy, fragile "classic" approach to ribbon microphones and went in a completely new direction. The R-121 gives all of the warmth and natural sound that experienced engineers have long turned to ribbon mics for, but in a compact, light-weight, high output and tough-as-nails package that was unheard of in a ribbon mic before the R-121.

The SF-12 stereo coincident ribbon microphone combines high quality audio performance with outstanding stereo separation and imaging. It is a modern ribbon design with no audible diffraction effects or cavity resonance. Roswell Pro Audio Mini K67X Matched Pair
Mini K67x is a compact, large-diaphragm condenser with harmonic coloration from its transformer-coupled circuit. The voicing is not overtly colored, but is not as neutral as the Mini K87; the upper mids (4-7kHz) are slightly scooped, and the rolloff above 12kHz is very gradual, giving the mic extended "air."

Each K67x is built by hand in California, burned in, and extensively tested.

Matching Criteria
We match these mics to 0.5dB in sensitivity (measured at 1kHz), and 1.5dB (or better) in frequency response, 50Hz–15kHz.

Roswell Pro Audio Mini K67x expands the promise of "sonic diversity" by introducing a new sound to the Mini K product line. The capsule voicing strikes a balance between neutrality and flattery, with tight bass and an open top end. The circuit enhances the source with harmonics. The mic retains the "point and shoot" simplicity of the Mini K lineup.

Like all Roswell microphones, the Mini K67x is designed, assembled, and tested in California.

Roswell Pro Audio Mini K87 is a high-resolution condenser microphone with a neutral voicing. It aspires to transparency rather than color. Yet it retains enough character to capture and communicate the emotion of the source.

The mic's sound comes from a combination of a specially tuned K67/K87-style capsule and a circuit that we've designed to enhance and complement it. The final voicing of the microphone is a manual process that enables us to create a very consistent sound.

The Mini K87 excels on vocals (sung and spoken, including voiceover and podcasting), guitars, acoustic strings, and drum overheads.

Roswell Pro Audio Colares • Boutique Vocal Condenser Microphone
The Colares is a large-body condenser microphone with a larger than life sound. It is our flagship vocal microphone, and excels at injecting color, vibe, excitement, and life to a track.

This is not a neutral or transparent microphone. It is unapologetically rich in both tone and harmonics. The design inspiration was the Telefunken ElaM 251, but our goal was to deliver all the detail and vintage tone of the 251 without the cost, maintenance hassle, or noise floor of a tube microphone.

The Colares has two unique features: a pad/voicing switch and a 3-way filter switch. Learn more about these in the Description tab below, on this page.
